From:How Gay Are You? 1/2
Date: 2010-10-12 03:47 pm (UTC)Jared looks up from the book he’s reading to shoot Brayden a quizzical look. “Is that it?”
With a roll of his eyes, Brayden tosses his game controller to the floor and spins a little in his place. “How’d you know you were gay?”
These are the times when Jared really wishes Jensen wouldn’t leave him alone with this kid. He’s all of thirteen and somehow manages to ask the most complicated, weird-ass questions in the world.
“Uh,” Jared holds his place in his book and runs his fingers through his hair. “Liking sex with dudes was kind of a tip off,” he answers, shrugging his shoulders when Brayden gives him an exasperated look. “I don’t know, man. I just knew.”
It’s a lot more complicated than that, but Jared doesn’t figure Brayden needs to hear about the way he and his next door neighbor used to jerk each other off while watching girl-on-girl porn or how he used to trade blow jobs for beer before he was old enough to have his own fake ID.
Brayden squirms a little, obviously not satisfied with the answer but unable to ask what he really wants to know. “Yeah, but Jensen says you’re bi and you always say you’re gay.”
Jared narrows his eyes a little and tries not to be bothered by the way Brayden still cringes when he’s afraid Jared’s mad at him for something. They’re working on it – someday, he’ll figure out how to ignore Jared’s mood swings and shrug him off all together.
“Where’s this comin’ from? You have a thing for some guy at school or somethin’?”
It’s almost funny how hard Brayden shakes his head in response. “No!” He clears his throat and drops his head. “I mean, it’s not my thing, but whatever.” With an embarrassed laugh, he looks up through shaggy bangs to meet Jared’s eye. “Dude, that’s why I wanna know, okay? I just. I don’t wanna sound like an idiot when people ask me what the deal is with you guys or whatever. I wanna understand it.”
Jared has a hard time laughing at the kid when he’s sincerely trying to wrap his head around something that he hasn’t been exposed to all that much. He can relate, being as he was nine the first time he lived with a family who told gay jokes like they breathed air. Jared knew it was wrong, that it wasn’t funny and it kind of made him nauseous, but he had no way of knowing why. He doesn’t want Brayden to be confused about stuff like that.

Date: 2010-10-12 02:22 pm (UTC)My Secret Identity 1/2
Date: 2010-10-12 07:10 pm (UTC)He’s not ashamed or anything but since his dad walked out on them six years ago, Jared’s taken it upon himself to look out for his mom. His brother went to college and his sister started acting out all over the place so he’s the only one she can count on and he doesn’t want to let her down. There’s no doubt she’ll still love him but Jared doesn’t want to give her anything else to worry about, either.
Now that he’s out of film school and busy with his career hundreds of miles from home, it’s a little bit easier to keep the two sides of his life separate. He talks to his mother on the phone all the time, tells her every last detail of his life outside of dating. When she asks, he finds a way to vaguely mention that he’s dating someone from set or having dinner with someone he met in a club. She doesn’t ask for more specifics and he doesn’t offer them up.
On a particularly rainy Saturday afternoon in late January, Jared is absolutely not thinking about his mother while he’s balls deep in the ass of the hot, little twink he has cuffed to his bed. His plump lips are stretched white around the ball gag in his mouth and cock is swollen and wet in the ring Jared attached before they started more than two hours ago. It’s the pleading whimpers that escape around the gag that are about to set Jared off, though.
Of course, that’s when the doorbell rings. At first, he just leans forward and grips the cuffs against his partner’s wrists, growling “Ignore it,” as he pushes his hips forward with enough force to shake the bed.
Unfortunately, his visitor isn’t going away. Finally, Jared has to back off of the bed, taking a few deep breaths to calm himself before he grabs his jeans from the chair. “Go finish yourself off in the shower,” he gestures vaguely over his shoulder. There’s really no point in making the guy wait until whoever is pounding on the door stops. “Make sure you’re fully dressed before you come out,” he adds because the last thing he needs is some business contact seeing his half-naked boy toy parading through the house.
He’s willing his cock to stand down as he pulls a tee shirt over his head and prays that the smell of sex isn’t permeating the entire house. He’s not in the best of moods at the moment, but he does manage to compose himself before he yanks the door open and finds himself face-to-face with his smiling mother, suitcase in one hand and purse clutched to her shoulder with the other.
“Hey, baby,” she says, surging forward to kiss his cheek.

Date: 2010-10-12 03:02 pm (UTC)Happy Non-Anniversary 1/2
Date: 2010-10-13 12:28 am (UTC)He can hear Jared downstairs, moving around the kitchen and he knows that he's making some ridiculous breakfast that should feed a family of four. He'll eat most of it himself but he'll make sure Jensen gets what he wants before he accidentally drops the leftovers into the dishes for the dogs. Then he'll mock Jensen's need for a pot and a half of coffee while he drinks some disgusting energy drink that tastes like piss water, as far as Jensen's concerned.
He listens and his stomach turns because, if he does this, he might not hear Jared making breakfast tomorrow. He might not be able to fall asleep next to him while they watch some movie that they've both seen a thousand times on the couch. He might not see that totally unguarded smile aimed solely at him if he opens his mouth and tells Jared that he's gay.
Danneel's been telling him that he's insane for months. Jared's a good friend and an even better man; he's not going to write Jensen off just because he likes guys. Jensen doesn't tell her that he doesn't worry that Jared won't approve. He just worries that things will change.
Pushing himself up in the bed, he leans against the headboard and stares at the wall with a settling sense of dread. Right now, it's not a big deal if they get a little drunk and make out at a party or if they wager a hand job on the outcome of a basketball game. If they celebrate a good day on set with a blow job or commiserate a really hard one with a rim job and some fingering, it's not like it means anything.
As of now, they fuck around sometimes and wake up in each other's bed more often than not, but it's just something they do. When he tells Jared the truth, it's going to change the dynamic of their non-relationship completely.
Still, he knows that he needs to do it. He trusts Jared like his own family and he wants Jared to feel the same. He might throw up all over the kitchen counter, but he needs to do this.
He thinks of how he's going to say it all the way down the stairs, what his opening line is going to be and how he wants the conversation to go. It's really hard to remember any of it when he rounds the corner into the kitchen and finds Jared standing at the counter with a huge muffin in his hand, a lit candle burning in the center.
“What is this?” he asks, smiling and taking a seat when Jared motions toward the bar stool.
“It's our anniversary, man,” Jared says, all smiles and genuine affection.
It stabs Jensen in the gut, the weight of the warmth and the guilt of his secret. Without stopping to consider what he's saying, he blurts, “Jared, I'm gay.”

Date: 2010-10-13 12:27 am (UTC)Like a Unicorn 1/2
Date: 2010-10-13 01:35 pm (UTC)She’s walked by a thousand times but, until today, she’s never had the nerve to enter. Now that she’s here, she can’t help wondering if it’s a little over-hyped. Sure, it’s state of the art and the music blaring through the speakers is cool, but everyone looks angry and she’s not sure she wants them anywhere near her shoulder with a needle.
The huge guy at the first station looks up from his magazine and his face breaks into a beautiful smile that warms Genevieve to her toes. If she were a girlie girl, she would say that it’s like the sun breaking through the clouds when this guy raises to his feet and rolls his shoulders before extending his hand and saying, “Hi, I’m Jared.”
“Genevieve,” she replies, glancing down to find her hand totally engulfed in his. “I have an appointment with Steve.” Someone near the back of the shop huffs and Jared rolls his eyes but Genevieve is pretty sure she has the name right. “Am I missing something?”
“Not from where I’m standin’,” is the response at her back. Glancing over her shoulder, she sees a skinny guy with aviators on the end of his nose, making no attempt to hide the way he’s checking her out.
The woman painting her nails at the station across from Jared’s rolls her eyes. “With lines like that, it’s no wonder you’re single,” she says in a gravelly voice that shoots straight to Genevieve’s tingly places.
The guy shakes his head and pulls his sunglasses off, hooking them on the scooped neckline of his tee shirt. “Wouldn’t be, if someone pulled the stick out of her ass and stopped freakin’ over nothing.” He’s not bad looking or anything, but the smarmy intro has probably tainted Genevieve’s opinion forever. “Chad.”
She just looks at the hand he offers, but doesn’t bother to tell him her name. To Jared she says, “So…I had an appointment?”
“Right. Do you have a sketch or an idea or a concept?” Before she can ask, Jared adds. “Steve called in sick.”
“On the first really kick-ass surf day in months,” the petite brunette at the reception desk chimes in without looking up from her computer screen.
Jared rolls his eyes and nods. “You’re stuck with me.”
For some reason, Genevieve doesn’t think that’s a bad thing. “I’m not an artist,” she warns him, handing over the rough sketch she’s been drawing and erasing since she was sixteen.
She’s always figured that her first tattoo should make a statement so she decided long ago that she wanted a unicorn with a rainbow mane. It’s unique, totally gay and totally bad ass, just like Genevieve. Her parents don’t know about the gay part yet, nor do most of her friends, so it’s really important that Jared gets this right. Watching him consider the picture is nerve-wracking

Date: 2010-10-12 03:15 pm (UTC)High school AU, where Jared is already out, but Jensen isn't (he told Jared, but that's it) and he knows it's hard for Jared to hide that they're together at school and/or to their parents who are friends with each other.
The First Day 1/2
Date: 2010-10-13 03:46 pm (UTC)*
He’s well over six feet tall, skinny as anything with gangly limbs that seem to control him more than he’s in charge of them most days. By all appearances, Jared should probably snap in half in a strong wind but Jensen knows the truth. That skinny kid that the idiot jocks pick on and the girls roll their eyes at when he answers a question in class is stronger than all of them combined.
Being sixteen and gay isn’t easy, no matter how liberal the school thinks it is. Wearing rainbow bracelets and refusing to deny or defend against accusations of ‘homo’ and ‘fag’ don’t exactly win a guy much respect. Jensen hopes that someday, when they get out of this place and into real life – whatever that means – things will be different. For now, he just wishes that he could stand up to them the way Jared does, without an ounce of hesitation or shame in his eyes.
Even if Jensen didn’t find him brilliant and hilarious and generally awesome, he would probably still love Jared for his courage. It’s not something Jensen can bring himself to say out loud – it sounds too emo and melodramatic and insane – but that’s what it is. Jared comes to school every day, knowing damn well he’s going to get mocked and picked on, and he holds his head up like he doesn’t even hear their hateful, scathing words. If Jensen could choose to be like anybody someday, he would choose to be just like Jared.
In Jensen’s car on the way to school, Jared is singing along with the radio and watching the scenery outside the window while he holds Jensen’s hand against the gear shift. It’s probably the most perfect moment in the history of, well, ever.
“You gonna fight back today?” Jensen asks, just like he asks every morning.
Predictably, Jared smiles and shakes his head. “Nothin’ to fight about. Nothin’ to prove.”
He’s been saying it every day for the last year. Every day Jensen wishes that he could do the same. He wishes he had the same emotional fortitude, the conviction that who he is doesn’t need validation. He has a hard enough time not punching everyone who mouths off to him for being friends with Jared. He’d probably get expelled if they found out he was in love with the guy. Every morning, he convinces himself that he’s doing the right thing for both of them by keeping his mouth shut.
“Pull over,” Jared says when they’re about four blocks from the school.
Jensen looks at him sideways, but complies. “Dude, what’s goin’-,” he starts to ask. He can’t finish because Jared yanking him forward by back of his neck, kissing him in that way that makes Jensen’s toes tingle.
When he pulls back, Jared’s smile is shy – not a word Jensen usually associates with him. “Sorry. Knew I wouldn’t get another chance until tonight,” he apologizes, focusing on the backpack at his feet.
Jensen tugs him in for another kiss and presses their foreheads together. “You know I love you, right? I mean, even when I’m not doin’ this at school.”
Bringing his palm up to Jensen’s cheek, Jared smiles again and sort of nods. “I don’t want you to do this at school,” he confides. “I can keep pretty cool when it’s just me they’re pickin’ on, but if they start in on you I’d have to kill somebody.”
Jensen thinks about it all the way to the school and through the first three periods of the day, all of which he has with Jared and all of which include some idiotic form of bullying. Jared pretends not to hear it, Jensen tells them to knock it off, everyone just ignores him and the clock keeps right on ticking away. Every day, same as the one before.

Date: 2010-10-12 04:28 pm (UTC)A Quiet Dinner at Home 1/2
Date: 2010-10-13 05:09 pm (UTC)His father sits at one end of the table, quietly chewing his pot roast and systematically ignoring everyone else. He's not rude or anything but his social skills could definitely use some work. Again, it says something if even Jensen notices his lack of interaction.
At the opposite end of the table, his mother is blabbering on about some study she read in some medical journal about something Jensen doesn't understand or care to pretend that he does. Danneel is watching her carefully, nodding in all the right places and saying all the right things. Sometimes he can't help marveling at the way she manages to fit in everywhere like she just belongs.
Across from them, Jared is eating happily, seemingly paying no mind to anything but the food heaped onto his plate. With anyone else it may seem impolite but with Jared, it's just normal.
Jensen is taking a drink of his water when he feels Danneel's hand creeping toward the inseam of his pants. He jolts a little, enough to spill half of his water onto the table and Jared doesn't make it better by running the toe of his boot up the inside of Jensen's calf. He's now convinced that this entire dinner is part of some nefarious scheme to kill him off so they can run away together.
“You alright, son?” his father asks.
Of course he chooses now to pay attention to what's happening.
“Fine,” Jensen nearly shouts in response, gulping at what's left of his water to keep from saying anything else.
“Are you sure, honey?” his mother chimes in, leaning forward a little to see him around Danneel. “You're looking a little bit flushed.”
Of course he's looking flushed! Danneel seems to think that rubbing his thigh, her pinky brushing against his dick, is an appropriate way to calm him down and Jared's just wiggling his eyebrows like a cartoon villain. Jensen's life blows.
Before he can answer, Danneel leans over and presses a kiss to the side of his head. “Relax,” she breathes against his ear and Jensen wishes the floor would just swallow him. It’s like she doesn’t even care that his parents are sitting right here, watching them.
Then Jared decides to make it even more awkward by leaning across the table and trapping Jensen's shaking hand in his own, stroking his thumb over Jensen's skin while he narrows his eyes in concern. This is just awesome. Really, they should do it more often.

Date: 2010-10-12 05:31 pm (UTC)(Although, if he's super-reserved he probably wouldn't. Dilemma! Maybe a certain someone made him wear them by looking at him with big hopeful eyes?)
Subtle 1/3
Date: 2010-10-13 06:36 pm (UTC)*
Mike was very drunk when he slung an arm around Jensen at the bar and slurred, “Wanna bet, buddy?” against the side of his face. A week later, Jensen can’t remember what they were betting on anymore and he doesn’t really care.
The terms were clear; if Jensen lost, he had to wear something with visible rainbow colors into court on National Coming Out Day. It wasn’t a big deal at the time because, while Jensen doesn’t run around announcing his sexual preferences to juries and his clients, he’s not exactly ashamed of it or anything. In fact, he has a really nice pair of cufflinks that his ex-boyfriend bought him to cover up the fact that he was cheating on Jensen with one of the other partners in Jensen’s firm. They’re subtle, probably the best thing that came out of his relationship with Doug.
Mike had other plans, though. Showing up on Jensen’s doorstep the Sunday night before, he dropped a small box into Jensen’s palm, pressed a kiss to his cheek and made some crack about photographic evidence before running back to his car like he was afraid Jensen was going to punch him or something. Truth be told, it was probably a smart move.
The new cufflinks aren’t subtle at all. They’re large and round with a pair of interlocking rainbow arrows on each surface. Jensen doesn’t do flashy. He pays top dollar to look understated and refined. He doesn’t so much mind the message of the cufflinks as he does the garish tackiness of them. Still, he’s a man of his word so he clipped them in place and went through his day as though nothing were out of the ordinary. As far as he knows, nobody even noticed. If they did, nobody mentioned them.
It’s kind of strange, but he’s a little bit disappointed in that when he leaves the courthouse around six. He’s glad most people didn’t notice, but there’s that cute stenographer that he’s sure he saw at a club last weekend. It would have been alright for him to comment.
He decides to grab a coffee and take a walk through the dog park on his way home; fresh air and cute dogs are always a welcome respite at the end of a long day. Also, it’s as good a place as a bar for picking up available men, especially when Jensen is dressed in his favorite Zegna suit.
After a half an hour in the park, he’s feeling better. It’s not very crowded today, but there was a hot grad student with a Golden Retriever who gave Jensen his phone number and said they should get together for coffee sometime. Even if he never calls, the ego boost is enough to make Jensen feel better than he has all day.
He’s just about to call it a night when he turns to toss his empty coffee cup and sees a giant Mastif staring back at him. It’s the most unscientific hypothesis ever, but Jensen likes to think that big dogs equal big owners. Jensen really likes his men big.
His theory, however, is disproven when a tiny wisp of a woman comes running over with a leash in her hand and an exasperated look on her face. “Harley, your daddy is gonna kill me,” she groans, stopping short to smile at Jensen. “Oh, hi.”
Jensen smiles and offers her a short wave. “You have a beautiful dog,” he says, tucking his hands into his pockets. She’s not exactly who he was looking for but Jensen’s momma raised him better than to be rude to complete strangers.
“Oh, he’s not mine,” the woman insists, tucking her hair behind her ear. She might be flirting with him, but Jensen’s never really been very good at picking up on those signs from women. Probably because he doesn’t spend a lot of time looking for them.

Date: 2010-10-12 06:35 pm (UTC)(This legit happened to one of my best friends in high school. Poor Dean, he thought we'd all be shocked.)
Big Deal 1/2
Date: 2010-10-14 01:52 am (UTC)*
To say that Jared is ridiculously excited about tonight would be a huge understatement. Planning has been quite the undertaking but the cupcakes are now iced and sprinkled, the bar that his dad always thinks is so efficiently locked is open and ready, the play list is set with the perfect party music. Finally, after three years, he's ready for this.
He's been so careful to hide an tell-tale signs; shopping with Chad so he looks like all the other guys in his class, going to action movies with Jensen so he can talk about the explosions at lunch on Monday, taking Genevieve to dances and games so everyone will think that he's normal.
Jared is really good at pretending he's just like everyone else. It's pretty exhausting, though, and he's ready to let go of normal now. It's time to admit that he's not like all the other guys at school and that he's okay with it.
As convinced as he is that he's doing the right thing, it's still kind of daunting so he's throwing a party to tell his friends first. Once he has their support, he can set his mind on worrying about everybody else.
He waits until they're all scattered around his living room, snacking on his fabulous pink cupcakes, to make his big announcement. Clanging a little glass stirrer around the inside of his martini glass, he calls out, “Can I have your attention please?” It takes a second for all of the conversations to stop but when they do, he goes on. “I invited all of you here to make an announcement.” He pauses for dramatic effect. “I'm gay.”
His friends barely blink before they all return to whatever they were doing before he interrupted. It's as though he never said anything at all.
“HEY!” he shouts. “This is my coming out party!”
Chad shouts back. “What, d'you expect presents?”
Jared is to flabbergasted to respond, sputtering a little when Genevieve rests her hand on his arm and says, “Sweetie, we already knew that,” like it's obvious or something.
Just like that, they're all acting like Jared's not even in the room. On the one hand, he figures he should be grateful that nobody's been treating him any differently this whole time but Jared is mostly disappointed that not one of his friends seem to care that this is a big deal for him.
They don't even notice when he leaves the room and slips out onto the deck alone.
