Title: One of the Bad Guys
Author: [livejournal.com profile] raeschae
Character(s)/Pairing: Jared/Jensen
Theme: Theme 04: Lover's Rock
Prompt(s): #04 - Promise
Rating: PG
Disclaimer: Not mine.
Summary: Jared's pretty sure that Jensen's past can't be as bad as Jensen thinks it is. He might be wrong.

“I just want to state, for the record, that you do not have to tell me anything.” Jared balances two mugs of dark-roast, along with a couple packages of Pop-Tarts, as he comes into the living room. He offers half of his haul to Jensen, who is sitting on the couch, looking like he’s about to chew through his own lip. “It’s not going to change anything for me.”

It’s getting a little ridiculous, the way they’re dragging this out. Jared knows that it’s hard for Jensen to talk about, but at this point anything short of prostitution is going to be a let down.

Scooting a little closer on the couch, he waits for Jensen to look at him. When he does, he asks, “Jensen, did you once kill a man just to watch him die?” Jensen looks back to the window, but Jared can see that he’s smiling a little bit. “Then fuckin’ tell me all about your sordid past, or let's go back to bed.” He doesn’t want to sound like he doesn’t care, but at this point, Jared doesn’t really fucking care.

“Alright, fine. Jesus Christ, what ever happened to being supportive for your boyfriend?”

It’s the first time either of them has ever used the word, and it kind of makes Jared want to smile like a giddy little kid. Instead, he settles back on the couch and asks, “You want me to hold your hand or what?”

“I want you to shut the fuck up and listen for a second, smart ass,” Jensen shoots back, but he’s laughing as he turns and leans against the arm of the couch. “Jesus, a guy tries establish a platform of honesty on which to build a healthy and thriving relationship.”

Jared snorts in the middle of the sentence and Jensen rolls his eyes with a grin that says he doesn’t know why he likes this guy when he’s such an enormous dork. Jared figures whatever secrets Jensen is sitting on can’t be so bad if he’s willing to joke around about them.

They fall into silence, both drinking their coffee and staring at the shifting lights as day begins to break. Jared can’t speak; Jensen has to make the next move here.

“I remember a couple of Daves from high school. Far as I know, I didn’t do anything to any of them personally, but he’s not wrong. I told you pride gets me in trouble a lot, ya know? Most of the shit I’ve done comes down to me wanting what I want, when I want it.”

“Lot of people are like that, though.” Jared’s making excuses, but that doesn’t mean that what he’s saying isn’t true. Everybody’s selfish sometimes.

“Lot of people don’t do damn near anything to get it, though.” Shaking his head, Jensen tilts his head back and drains his coffee cup before setting it on the floor and linking his hands behind his head. “I had this college professor this one time – cocky son of a bitch – who let me blow him instead of taking his ridiculously impossible pop quizzes, right? Got me outta havin’ to go to the class, and I like suckin’ dick, so why not get somethin’ out of it?”

Jared would point out that Jensen wouldn’t be the first guy in history to sleep with a professor for a grade, but he figures Jensen knows that already. Instead, he just bumps Jensen’s shoulder with his own and goes on listening.

“Final grades go up, and guess who failed the class?” Jensen just shakes his head. “I went to see him about it, reminded him that we had a deal, and he blew me off like he had no idea what I was talkin’ about.” He catches Jared’s eye for a second, and then looks away again. “So I outed him to his wife, and forwarded all the dirty e-mails he used to send me to the entire student body.” Meeting Jared’s eye again, he shakes his head like he can’t believe himself. “I ruined a man’s marriage and his career because he wouldn’t give me the grade I wanted in his stupid class.”

With a shrug, Jared stands up and holds out a hand. “You want more coffee?”

Jensen grabs his cup and follows Jared to the kitchen. “Recorded sex with a closeted triple A ball player once,” he says, hopping onto the counter and resting his head against the cabinets. “Sent it to a few of his teammates and threatened to hand a copy over to the papers.”

Handing him the refill, Jared sips at his own and asks, “Why’d you do that one?”

“I don’t even remember.” Fixing his gaze on the light figure, Jensen’s face falls. “I’m sure I thought I had a good reason for it, though. Always seemed like a good reason at the time.” Turning his face toward Jared, he says, “I’m not a good guy, Jay. I mean, I don’t do shit like that now, but at some point it doesn’t really matter anymore, does it? I mean, you can’t balance karma like that, man.”

Jensen’s not nearly the smooth criminal that he thinks he is, though. Stepping in between his spread knees, Jared grips the back of his neck with both hands. “Stop,” he commands, voice a little more firm than he intended. “I’m not goin’ anywhere. You’re not gonna scare me off. Just stop it.”

Lazily grin spreading over his lips, Jensen says, “You might wanna hold off on the promise rings until you hear the worst of it.”

Leading Jensen forward by the scruff of his neck, Jared sucks slowly on Jensen’s lips until he feels fingers dig into his hips. Against Jensen’s mouth, he says, “No more.” He kisses him again, quicker this time. “You and me. That’s all.”

Years in the Making

Ummmmmmm that wasn´t so bad...right? I mean the teacher deserved it for not giving him the grade at the end of the deal,it was only fair.

Awwwwww that was very sweet and secure of Jared,if u love the man u love the present and the future of him ...the past is in the past even if it comes to kick u in the ass.

Looking forward to read more
Im sure it won´t matter what Jensen says Jared is not going anywhere.

I don't know - I guess it depends on whether or not you believe that kind of thing is ever really justifiable. Some would argue that he shouldn't have been blowin' the guy in the first place, whether he held up his end of the bargain or not. In the story, I think Jared's more inclined to agree with you. Jensen seems to think of it as a 'mistake,' so I'm guessing he'd be on the other said of the argument.

Either way, I think it's an interesting debate. Sometimes 'good' and 'bad' aren't as easily defined as you wish they were.

Jared had better be bringing out the best in his boy.

He was younger and dumber then? Does that make it better?

Yeah, Jared's got some work to do, but I think maybe they'll manage to figure it out. :) Have hope, young one. I'll try not to let you down.

I heart Jared for being such an awesome understanding boyfriend :) I had to go back and read the last one cause I was good and waited till I got home from work to read it lol.

I'm impressed with your restraint - I couldn't wait to get home from work to write this one. (I really should have, though - there were a lot of errors I had to go back and fix due to my inability to multi-task. *facepalm*)

Jared IS an awesome boyfriend - Jensen's kind of losing the argument for bad karma, I think. ;)

Ah, the nasty little acts that a cocky young man thinks he can get away with.
*pets him*

No, he wasn't nice. At all. But he learned, and now - time to move on. I like Jared just...moving on past. :)

That is SO it - he was young and immature and stupid - thought he could do anything and get away with whatever he wanted. Turns out, he learned maybe that's not always the case. Oh, Jensen.

Thank goodness he found a guy who doesn't give a flip about the past!

I think the prof had that one coming to him, though. I really loved how Jared was joking with him, just to get him in a calmer state of mind. *squees at the schmoop* GOD they're just adorable together. Really hoping none of this really comes back to kick him too hard in the ass. Hoping that Jensen realizes Jared isn't going anywhere soon, he's in this for the long haul.

Psuedo-spoiler? This is not the one that kicks him in the ass.

Jared's in it, but I'm not sure he knows exactly what he's in just yet. ;)

(I'm totally doing my little ominous, evil super-villain laugh over here.)

That is actually some fucked up shit, not super fucked up but still fucked up. He sure had reasons but the penalties he dealt out seemed too harsh for the crimes. I think the biggest thing is, Jensen didn't have the right to dole out those penalties. But Jensen knows that and thankfully, that's enough for Jared too.

Awwww, these boys are so cute. I like how even though the relationship started as casual, it has a strong foundation of trust now :)

Date: 2010-08-05 04:37 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] raeschae.livejournal.com
I think you're so right - the punishments definitely did not fit the crimes. That's kind of the point, though - he did things without thinking, mostly out of wounded pride, and it ended up hurting a lot of people. Now he has to deal with knowing he was that guy. :(

I think the prof had that one coming, so it wasn't all that bad, the other one well there really isn't a good reason for it. *shrugs* so what is the worst? I love Jared just being all, whatever, about it. Perfect ;-)

Wow, that's kind of bad. What happened to make Jensen change. Jared is awfully trusting. m :)

You'll find out a little bit more about Jensen's motivation in coming chapters. And you're right - Jared is trusting. There will come a point when he has to decide if that's the smartest thing. :)

I was wondering where you were going to go with Jensen's sordid past - I didn't guess this, but it works like gangbusters. Jared's reaction was balanced and sweet - and yeah, undoubtedly there's more, right??

I'm curious about the worst now.

And I dunno, I kinda get Jared, shit you done before shouldn't matter, but it's wonderful that Jensen cares enough to tell.

From: [identity profile] raeschae.livejournal.com
Jensen doesn't want to mess this one up (he kind of likes Jared just a wee, little bit) - and I also think that he doesn't want anyone else to mess it up for him. Though I think sometimes it's easier to say what Jared's saying than to actually do what he is saying.

Yikes! younger Jensen was like totally out of control wasn't he? why am I comparing this Jensen to Pink? O.o I guess that behind the music episode is stuck in my head.

Mmm, yep, Gen really does have a valid reason to be weary of Jensen. Now it's time for him to show us that he's deserving of an awesome guy like Jay. *whispers* and Ian. ;D

Date: 2010-08-05 08:38 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] raeschae.livejournal.com
I think that's a totally fair comparison! Of course, I think any mention of Pink is always a fair comparison.

Jensen's got some ground to cover, I know, but I hope you feel like he earns Jared's trust in the end. I'm working on getting them there anyway. :)

That's definitely one perfectly valid opinion. Not everyone is going to react in the same way to a situation like this - I'm kind of like Jared when it comes to what people have done before today. There are a lot of things that I did when I was much younger, far less experienced, and way more immature that I wouldn't dream of doing today (nothing like Jensen did, but things that I wouldn't be proud to tell everyone about nonetheless). I think everybody has, so I guess I'd kind of like to believe that there are still some people believe that the past can be the past. While I'll agree it shapes the future, I also think that people can learn from their mistakes and grow - that they don't have to be locked into the same sordid pattern forever.

It's so far from a black and white issues - that's part of what I love about it!

Looking forward to more.

I think not taking the pop quizzes is Jensen's bad in the first part and outing the slimy cheating teacher who was taking advantage of his students and betraying his wife is good.
Don't know about the triple a player because we didn't find out why. Extortion=bad, but I'm a sucker for poetic justice (it happens so rarely that bad things happen to bad people).
ps I love your fic!

I so glad you're still liking it!

And it was NEVER my intention to imply that Jensen did anything he did for any kind of pay out. I guess you can argue that he expected one in the form of grades, but extortion in the literal sense never even crossed my mind. In fact, in the first (and far too long) draft of this chapter, he was just pissed that the guy pretended not to even recognize Jensen when he was with his teammates, let alone acknowledge what they were doing together when said teammates weren't around. My word count was way high, so I scrapped that part. It's always about pride with him, though - never about money. If that makes it better.

I totally didn't mean for him to come across that way! Those just happened to be the first examples that popped into his head - when the last story comes out in a couple of chapters, you'll see that he's not just into outing people. :)

From: [identity profile] bella-dayenu.livejournal.com
I don't think I explained myself right...or maybe I just confused myself. I don't think it's necessarily "bad" to out people that need to be outed. Both examples, the people kinda deserved to be outed...right? I just meant bad because I read your comments and I can see that the worst wasn't told...so I jumped ahead of myself. *SIGH* This verse does funny things to me.

I didn't take it as an insult or anything - no worries. I love that you saw something in reading that I didn't see in writing. Different perspectives make things more interesting. What he did, in my opinion, IS pretty bad. I have a different opinion on outing people that some, for mostly personal reasons, though. I love that not everyone comes from the same POV, though - that's what makes life more interesting!
